If the new world fed Dreams, what was the old world reality that wetted the appetite for them? And how did that reality caress and grip the shaping of a new one? -Toni Morrison.
I am interested in the folklore surrounding interracial relationships in the south. This folklore is still relayed as moral code in some social circles to discourage the mixing of race. There has been a tremendous amount of research on the effects of racism, however I am attempting to grasp (through invented and appropriated images) the mindset of those who perpetuate it. I create work that illustrates the lust, ridicule, and shame associated with the collision of white and black southern culture. The imagery often depicts the white females confrontation with her family, her curiosity towards the black male, and the sexual climax of their meeting. Other avenues of my exploration include the power, fear, and lure of the exotic. I choose to exemplify the stereotypes of both characters as well as the role place has in their cast systems.
